Joystiq hands-and-feet-on: Active Life Extreme Challenge
April 30, 2009 at 6:30 am

Of all the games on display at Namco Bandai's summer media event, none seemed to want more love than Active Life Extreme Challenge. After all, if you'd just watched the above trailer, would you truly be psyched to play it? Well, we've never been the type to pass on a game just because of a silly premise -- if that were the case, we'd never have known the love of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand -- so we gave it a shot. Turns out it's not half bad.

Sure, you might might be able to play skateboarding, BMX and other extreme sports with a controller, but then you wouldn't look totally goofy -- like we did! Trust us, you've never known humility until you've gotten down on your hands and kneed in front of hundred of other journalists to "rock climb" on a plastic mat.

Fan-named map 'Coastal Clash' coming to Battlefield Heroes soon
April 30, 2009 at 5:30 am

DICE recently opened up the Battlefield Heroes forums to suggestions for the title of the map you see above. The winner, Noobilator, ended up dubbing this particular area Coastal Clash, and it stuck. The map is still in the development process, and needs more play testing before being deployed into battle, but fans of Battlefield Heroes can look forward to destroying this peaceful little village sometime soon.

If you're trying to experience Battlefield Heroes for yourself, and don't have a beta invite, hit up the beta site. DICE is handing out codes to everyone.

Blood Bowl dev wants to work on Games Workshop's 'forgotten IPs'
April 30, 2009 at 4:30 am

If you're a fan of tabletop war games, you're probably hotly anticipating Cyanide's video game adaptation of Games Workshop's classic fantasy-football mash-up, Blood Bowl. You are also probably pretty old, and have a large, curly beard. Likely a gray or white beard, due to the aforementioned elderliness.

We've got great news for these senescent war game enthusiasts -- in a recent interview with Eurogamer, Cyanide's Antoine Villepreux explained the developer would be glad to tend to Games Workshop's "forgotten IPs that we think deserve video game adaptations." If the words Inquisitor and Mighty Empires bring haste to your old, old heart, a table-to-TV adaptation of your favorite Games Workshop franchises might be within the realm of possibilities.

April 30, 2009 at 3:30 am

Valve and Tripwire Interactive have announced that Killing Floor is now available for pre-order on Steam. Those who pre-order the title before its May 14 release will receive a 25% discount, knocking the price down to a cool $15.00. In addition to the pre-order announcement, a new trailer has been released showcasing the titles zombie-killing action. The game looks to combine some of our favorite shooter features, including six-player co-op and a persistent perk system. Oh, and zombies. Can't forget the zombies.

April 30, 2009 at 2:30 am

A recent Activision presser revealed Guitar Hero World Tour's downloadable offerings for next month, and boy, is it one eclectic hodge-podge of on-rails music. One of the packs is free, too! We love free hodge-podges.

  • "On Broken Glass" - Chimaira
  • "Grave of Opportunity" - Unearth
May 14: Pop Rock Track Pack (440 / $5.49)
  • "So What" - Pink (160 / $2)

Joystiq hands-on: The Munchables
April 30, 2009 at 1:30 am

You could rename The Munchables as Eat Everything: The Game and actually have one of the more fittingly descriptive titles in gaming history. Much like another Namco character -- Pac-Man -- the star of this Wii-exclusive game is out to eat anything and everything in sight, even if there's no real point.

Well, there is a backstory about a nefarious vegetable named Don Onion and his band of space pirates ... yeah, you're right, it's best to just focus on the gameplay.

Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao -- in 3D!
April 30, 2009 at 12:30 am

Okay, okay ... you can take off the red & blue glasses. The above video (and the one to be found after the break) are not, we admit, in 3D. Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is though. Not as in "polygonal," but honest-to-goodness 3D -- as long as you have the proper equipment.

Blitz Arcade was demoing the Namco Bandai published XBLA/PSN title yesterday on a Samsung DLP display capable of 3D output when used with special polarized glasses. While the game was more or less exactly what we played at New York Comic-Con, it was superficially deeper. The effect worked, even in conjunction with prescription glasses, lending the scenes impressive clarity while doing a great job of delineating the foreground / background planes gameplay traverses between.

Our major gripe -- apart from the fact the mode will only work on certain TVs -- is that it really seemed like nothing more than a novelty. While sharp, it robbed the game of color and detail, leaving behind what reminded us of Sega's old "holographic" arcade games. We applaud Blitz Arcade for trying something different, though; we're just glad it's not the only way to play this stylized beat-'em-up.

Joystiq impressions: Katamari Forever
April 29, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Remember when there were never going to be any more Katamari Damacy games? It must have just been a bad, bad dream, because Katamari (is) Forever. The new game, announced for US release yesterday, was previously announced in Japan as Katamari Damacy Tribute. It's rolling Stateside later this year exclusively for PS3 -- in full 1080p -- and we've seen it in action. Is it more than just crisp graphics and fancy new visual filters? You betcha. Extensive overview of GameStop reveals rising profits, world domination plans
April 29, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Looking at this examination of GameStop's sales over at Gamasutra, it's hard to not get frustrated thinking about how much money the used game monolith is making on our undying urge to play "the next big thing." Pulling figures from the 10-K filings made each year by the company with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Gamasutra noticed some interesting figures. Notably among those: "between 41 and 46 percent" of the company's gross profits are coming from used game sales alone.

And how much is the company making, on the dollar, for each dollar they invest in the used game market? According to the analysis, GameStop is making 48 cents on every 100 spent in the used games trade -- a nearly 50% profit margin on a service that accounts for "22 percent to 28 percent of GameStop's revenue."

Though GameStop's plans for world domination weren't explicitly spelled out in the 10-K, we expect to hear more about them in the coming months. Alright, alright -- fine, you got us. GameStop isn't planning global domination ... yet.

Joystiq impressions: Dead to Rights: Retribution
April 29, 2009 at 10:30 pm

As we reported last month, Namco Bandai is "rebooting" (that's cool-talk for "taking another crack at") Dead to Rights, its tale of a cop, his dog and lots of third-person shooting. Dead to Rights: Retribution, as it's known, was shown in non-playable form last night at Namco's preview event -- well, it was being played, just not by us.

We got a look at two levels from Jack Slate and his pooch Shadow's new adventure, one that's full of shotguns in the mouth, ripped-out throats and a glimmer of hope in its melee combat.

Sega's 'Wacky World of Sports' for Wii includes Extreme Ironing
April 29, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Activision picked the wrong day to announce a Wii sports minigame collection, because Sega just outclassed it. Compare the list of sports in Activision's Big League Sports: Summer with Sega's new Wacky World of Sports:

Big League Sports: tennis, beach volleyball, golf, soccer, baseball and football.
Wacky World of Sports: furniture racing, card boxing, log cutting, Fierljeppen, mud sliding, tuna tossing, cheese rolling, extreme ironing, and two more.

One of the characters is also some kind of Naruto parody, but we don't know whether to mark that as a plus or minus. Wacky World of Sports will be out in the regular world in "late 2009."

Joystiq hands-on: Trash Panic (aka Gomibako)
April 29, 2009 at 9:30 pm

We already previewed Gomibako back in October at TGS, so when we were given the chance to take another look -- this time under the North American title Trash Panic -- we nearly passed it up. It's trash after all, right? Well, yes. "Gomibako" literally translates to "trash box," and plenty of attendees at Sony's Gamers' Day event walked right by, assuming, "Oh. Tetris with trash. I get it."

It's easy to dismiss Trash Panic as a Tetris knockoff, but this puzzle game has a robust physics engine, whimsical graphics, and Katamari-like inspiration that'll find your trash bin growing with each level -- until it actually sits on top of Earth. As you play, the trash also grows in scale, and you'll graduate from tossing away routine office trash to comets, meteors, space stations, and even aliens.

If this sort of gameplay counted as community service, then the world would be a much cleaner place.

Joystiq hands-on: Tekken 6 (PS3/360)
April 29, 2009 at 9:00 pm

We don't know what's taken Namco so long to bring Tekken 6 home -- it was released in arcades November 2007, for crying out loud -- but we can finally say, after a not-really-all-that-unexpected announcement that the game would be appearing on Xbox 360 as well as PlayStation 3 and seeing loads of screenshots of the console version, we've finally played it. On a real, honest-to-goodness PS3. (We checked to make sure the cables weren't running to a hidden arcade cabinet.)

This was our first experience with the game, not having access to an arcade willing to shell out beaucoup bucks for a machine. But we'd played enough Tekken in the past (most recently, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on PS3) to be able to get a feel for this new installment. So, what makes it worthy of being one more than five? find out after the break!

Ultima Online cheats death with Stygian Abyss expansion
April 29, 2009 at 8:31 pm

This summer, we're gonna party like it's 1997: on our computers, playing Ultima Online. That's right, the ancient MMO is still alive and kicking somehow, and EA has just announced another expansion for it. Ultima Online: Stygian Abyss adds a new playable Gargoyle class to the game, and adds new areas for exploration, including the Gargoyle home of Ter Mur and (naturally) the Stygian Abyss dungeon, which is the "largest dungeon area ever introduced to Ultima Online."

Perhaps most importantly to longtime UO players, the download-only expansion will introduce a few new players curious about the long-running game. New, low-level players for the UO lifers to antagonize.

April 29, 2009 at 7:57 pm

PAIN has come a long way since launching with just one level, two characters, and no online multiplayer. It's managed to rank at the top of PSN downloads through a consistent stream of content add-ons, which -- you guessed it -- have added new levels, new characters, and online multiplayer. We got our hands on the next update, the "Sore Spots" level pack, and its new characters at Sony's recent Gamers' Day in Los Angeles.

Bethesda pushes the button on Fallout 3 update 1.5
April 29, 2009 at 7:30 pm

Bethesda has pinged our Pip-Boys with word that Fallout 3 has been updated to version 1.5. Don't get too excited, all it does is add the Broken Steel achievements and fix a few bugs. So few, in fact, that we can list them here:
  • Fixed issue with VATS calculations not appearing properly for perks (PC).
  • Fixed crash related to altered references between master files.
  • LOD objects render properly when loaded from DLC worldspaces.
  • Fixed issue with companion NPCs not loading into cells immediately after player.
Xbox 360 owners will have their Capital Wasteland auto-update the next time they start the game and PC owners can grab the update from Bethesda (Big Download has it, as well). The Broken Steel DLC will be ready to cut out the original game's unnecessary ending on May 5.

Namco bringing MagnaCarta 2 to US Xbox 360 owners
April 29, 2009 at 7:01 pm

US RPG fans, you're getting a dose of JRPG goodness later this year when Namco Bandai releases MagnaCarta 2 exclusively for the Xbox 360. IGN reports a localized version of the Unreal 3 engine-based game will arrive on US shores, and will feature over 40 hours of gameplay, as well as fully-narrated CG scenes. Developer Softmax is returning to create the sequel to 2005's PS2 title, MagnaCarta: Tears of Blood, with Korean artist Hyung-Tae Kim handling character designs for the sequel.

The game will take place on the Lanzheim Continent, which has been ravaged by war, and focuses on the story of Luto, who suffers from Amnesia. The game's battle system features a combination of turn-based mechanics with real-time elements, and players can switch between characters on the fly. You can even customize your party's AI at will.

Head past the break for a trailer that shows off pretty much what you'd expect: Beautiful men and passive-aggressive dialogue. Oh, and magic.

Ding-dong, the console Witcher is dead (for now)
April 29, 2009 at 6:29 pm

After rumors began circulating that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of The Witcher had been canceled, Shacknews reports that development on the game has been suspended due to "financial issues." Specifically, co-developer Widescreen Games alleges that CD Projekt failed to make a large payment to the company. This comes by way of Widescreen Games director Olivier Masclef, who stated, "After having committed to the project but not being covered financially on it for three months, I [had] no choice."

CD Projekt's joint CEO Michal Kicinski, meanwhile, states that all payments were made according to the game's milestone plan and that the late payments were the result of Widescreen missing its deadlines. Kicinski adds that the decision to put development on hold was "extremely difficult" and that the company is searching for a solution. He concludes, "So no matter what the final decision or solution we will find, please be sure that it will be the best for the game quality, and satisfaction of gamers, which is the most important for us!"

Whatever the real story is, the end result is that The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf is currently dead in the water.

Livingstone becomes 'life president' of Eidos
April 29, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Longtime Eidos executive Ian Livingstone has been promoted to life president of ... wait, he's the what? Livingstone now holds the title of "life president," following Square Enix's takeover of the troubled British publisher. The executive will continue working in the creative process and "act as a spokesperson for the Eidos group," reports GI.biz.

Livingstone will also continue working with the British government to push forward tax credits and the "skills agenda."

We Googled "life president" because we figured this was some business term we'd just never heard of. Nope, it appears totally made up. The closest thing we could find was the term "President for Life," a title used by dictators -- which is not what's going on with Livingstone ... we think.

Just to make sure Wikipedia and Google hadn't missed anything in their combined infinite wisdom, we decided to contact several major academic business institutions. Harvard and Wharton have yet to return our phone calls; however, Stanford's media relations offered, "I can't think of any academic with serious scholarship wanting to weigh in on this."

MadWorld places relationship between online hype and actual sales in doubt
April 29, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Analytics firm OTX Research seems to already be making a name for itself after announcing intentions last month to track game sales. Speaking at the LA Games Conference, OTX's Nick Williams explained the surprisingly weak connection between strong online awareness of a game versus actual, hard sales numbers, citing Sega's recently released MadWorld as a striking example.

Noting the game's top position among IGN.com's games with the "highest level of unique interest," MadWorld came in at a paltry number 41 using OTX's "GamePlan" metric, a system that measures "1,000 gamers on a weekly basis, tracking 400 games at any given time." This translates to a bleak eight percent of Wii owners having even heard of the title, much less purchasing it (that's .32 percent according to April's MadWorld sales data compared with the 20 million Wii owners in the US currently). Hmm, we wonder what that data would look like for Grand Theft Auto's recent foray onto Nintendo's massively popular handheld!

It took an awful lot of numbers right there to explain an idea we've all quietly agreed upon for so long now -- hype and marketing in the "hardcore" gaming world doesn't necessarily equal copies moving at retail. Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll be over here playing BlazBlue.

Ubisoft: full-year sales up 14% in 2008
April 29, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Ubisoft announced its financial results (PDF link) for fiscal 2008 (which ended on March 31, 2009), and for the most part news (or Newz, if you prefer) is good. Full-year sales for 2008 grew to €1.058 billion, up 14% over last year's €928 million total.

The company explained the strong results of its last quarter with "a continued very strong showing" for its Wii lineup, including Raving Rabbids TV Party, Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip, and My Fitness Coach. One million units each of Shaun White (not just limited to the Wii version), Tom Clancy's HAWX and the Petz and Imagine games were shipped to retailers in Q4.

Ubisoft's sales target for the 2009 fiscal year is €1.1 billion. It expects the first quarter sales of 2009 to be weaker than 2008's, due to the relative lack of major releases (Q1 2008 included Haze and Assassin's Creed on PC), with growth to occur in the second half of the year.

D3 trademarks new Matt Hazard title
April 29, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard was not a very good game. In fact, it kind of made our hearts hurt a little bit to play it. So, when we read that D3 had trademarked another Matt Hazard title, we were going to just let the opportunity to write about it slide by.

But that's when we read that the new title was "Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond," which really yanked the decision out of our hands. C'mon, "Blood Bath and Beyond"? That's hilarious. We're not sure if it's for the "retro" XBLA/PSN Matt Hazard game announced in February or a new sequel, but either way, a great name. ... Not that we'll play it.

Splinter Cell Conviction set for release by Christmas 2009
April 29, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Hey, look. It's Splinter Cell Conviction. Where have you been? Ah, still not ready to talk about that, huh? Well it sounds like you're due by this Christmas, according to Ubisoft's latest quarterly report. The report includes the company's CEO, Yves Guillemot, hyping "this Christmas" as the one to offer "one of the industry's most ambitious games line-ups which will include Assassin's Creed 2, James Cameron's Avatar, Splinter Cell Conviction, Rabbids Go Home and Red Steel 2."

If true, we'll no doubt be hearing a lot more about Sam Fisher's latest adventure at some point within the next eight months. With no Ubidays happening this year, we're counting on a big reveal at E3 -- and about time, too.

Madden NFL 10 First-Look Preview
April 29, 2009 at 10:12 pm

"What you see on Sunday, you see in the game," Madden NFL 10's producer, Phil Frazier, told me when I got my first glimpse of the game. That mantra doesn't wait until you're in-game either, as everything. from the loading screens (which show a series of down markers counting down from 4th to 1st), to the title screen (which shows first-row fans holding signs that say "Press" and "Start"), to the the run-up to kickoff give you the feeling of "being there." Once you're ready for the first snap, you'll see retro play-call menus and stat banners that show how close you are to breaking a record -- and that make a big deal of it when you do make NFL history.

But the most important push toward "what you see on Sunday" is Madden's new "Pro-Tak" animation system. In previous versions of Madden you'd get a maximum of one offensive and two defensive players in "gang tackles." But the new system allows as many as nine to get involved in a takedown. And if running backs aren't making forward progress, the zebras will blow the whistle to call the play dead (just like what you'd see on Sunday). What this ultimately means is that the "trucking" rating will make a huge difference in plowing a few extra feet. But that tactic won't work with just any player. Lightweight Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker will go down from a strong breeze, while workhorses like New York Giants tailback Brandon Jacobs can carry defenders until they get help.

Tekken 6 Hands-on Preview
April 29, 2009 at 10:01 pm

While it's been out in Japanese arcades since last year, yesterday's Namco Bandai event in San Francisco was the first time I was able to get my hands on Tekken 6 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 (the PS3 version was the one playable there), as well as to find out the game is headed to the PSP. The demo on display was rather limited -- only Jin, Kazuya, Zafina, and Bob were playable characters -- but it was great to get a little hands-on time with the console game. After plenty of Street Fighter IV and Soul Calibur IV play the past few months, it was nice to revisit to the familiar gameplay of Tekken.

Jin and Kazuya play just as they always have, but the new entrants, Zafina and Bob, feel very original. Zafina appears to be some sort of Egyptian assassin and has many stances and moves that play off of that theme. As for Bob...well, he's just really fat (similar to Rufus from Street Fighter IV). True story: One of the Tekken team members told me the entire impetus behind the oversized character was was that they thought it would be really funny to create a crazy-fat guy who could move around very quickly. In any case, both Zafina and Bob are fun to control.

Namco Bandai Teams Up With Food Network for Wii Cooking Game
April 29, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Namco Bandai recently revealed its partnership with the Food Network in order to bring Wii owners a realistic take on the cooking simulation genre. Kicking Mama out of the kitchen, Food Network: Cook Or Be Cooked will feature over 30 real recipes, complete with preparation instructions. In fact, you can literally cook a virtual meal in real time, from start to finish. Thankfully, an in-game timer lets you fast forward the clock so you don't actually have to wait five minutes for your water to boil. To add just a bit of "game" to the picture, Cook Or Be Cooked will rank each step of the recipe depending on how well you do.

The recipes are supposedly so accurate that, after cooking your simulation meal with the Wii motion controls, you may be able to replicate it in your own kitchen. To add to the kitchen's realism, you must also grab ingredients from the refrigerator, pull pots and pans from the cabinet, and check the pantry for dried goods.

Cook or Be Cooked is due out at the end of the year.

Katamari Forever First-Look Preview
April 29, 2009 at 8:42 pm

It would be easy to dismiss Katamari Forever as yet another cash-in on a worn-out franchise. After all, the game's creator, Keita Takahashi, stopped contributing to the game after the first Katamari. But the series' charm lies in its simple premise, unique art style, and original music. While it's not terribly innovative, the newest game seems to retain what makes Katamari so addictive, and presents it all in an attractive high-def package for the PS3.

This time around, the King has slipped into a coma, and the Prince and his cousins design a RoboKing to replace him, but the cybernetic doppelganger goes haywire and destroys the galaxy. So, once again, the Prince is tasked with restoring the cosmos (and the king's consciousness) by rolling everyday objects, people, and animals into massive balls of jumbled stuff. The king's lost memory provides an excuse to reuse levels from past Katamari games, making this less of a brand new adventure, and more of a best-of compilation (after all, in Japan, the game is called Katamari Damacy Tribute). That extends to the soundtrack as well, as it includes some original tracks while also employing remixes and re-recordings of the previous game's songs. As the Katamari series consists of my favorite soundtracks, I fully approve.

But the entire game is not just a redux. Restoring the king's memories introduces one new play mechanic: color restoration. Levels start out in monochrome, and only gain color as the Prince rolls up new objects. Rolling up items makes every duplicate item in the stage explode into color. As another visual treat, the level select screen eschews the series standard "flying through space" theme in favor of a pop-up storybook design -- flipping through the pages takes the place of planet-hopping.

Soul Calibur PSP Interview
April 29, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Namco Bandai announced Tuesday that their popular, weapon-based fighter, Soul Calibur, will appear on the PSP in Summer 2009 as Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny. At a recent Namco Bandai press conference, 1UP interviewed Broken Destiny's director, Noriyuki Hiyama, and asked him questions about the series' transition to the handheld, new fighters, character balancing issues, the difference between the North American and Japanese market, and possible DLC.

1UP: Why call the game Broken Destiny?

Noriyuki Hiyama: We wanted every player to play the game -- to forget about playing past Soul Caliburs. Just to start from scratch, and to enjoy the game.

EA Reveals New Wii Madden 10 Art Style
April 29, 2009 at 6:52 pm

Madden NFL 10 Wii Player Models

We all know the Wii isn't as graphically powerful as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and when it comes to multiplatform sports titles, that's a fact that tends to stand out even more. And it's a fact that seems to have spurred EA Sports to take a creative approach around with the Wii version of Madden NFL 10, as the publisher has revealed a surprising new art style that sets the game apart from it's realistic-looking counterparts.

Seeming to take inspiration from such titles as Team Fortress 2 and the original NES Ice Hockey, the new art style for Madden NFL 10 on the Wii adds exaggerated, cartoony player models with physical features that are designed to visually define their position (you can see the new lineup above). As the press release defines them:

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back -- his tall and lean frame is indicative of his speed, agility and ability to snatch any ball that comes his way.
Linebacker -- his solid, muscular body warns that he plans to knock your block off.
Quarterback -- his wide shoulders and small waist emphasize the "heroic leader" look.
Lineman -- this hulking mass lets you know he is there to stop you in your tracks.
Strong Safety/Running Back -- his compact body features muscular thighs that convey strength and speed.

Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Saga: Endless Frontier Review
April 29, 2009 at 6:10 pm

After finishing Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Saga: Endless Frontier, one accessory item in particular stands out strongly in my memory: The "Cat Ear Unit." The description reads, "An attempt to pander to all you freaks out there." Atlus should've put that on the box instead. Endless Frontier dispenses with anything even resembling dignity from the get-go. It's pretty obvious what the Atlus localization team thought of the story's sexual insanity, because they don't even bother trying to tone it down. Instead, they turn the volume up to eleven, then break off the knob.

The hurricane of undisguised innuendo starts early and never lets up. Endless Frontier's main protagonist, Cowboy wannabe Haken Browning, and his gang of bunny warriors blunder across the countryside, encountering cat-girls, fox-girls and robot-girls, all of whom expose copious amounts of cleavage. Take Haken's android companion Aschen; she has a special code that sends her into overdrive, making her armor "vent" by opening up in strategic locations. It goes on like that for the next 25 hours or so.

Pre-Order BlazBlue, Get Limited Edition Upgrade Free
April 29, 2009 at 5:51 pm

BlazBlue

Most limited edition versions of games charge consumers a $10 premium to own, but Aksys is taking a different approach with the upcoming console version of Arc System Works' 2D fighter, BlazBlue: Those who simply pre-order the game at a participating retailer will get upgraded to the LE version for free.

So what do you get for making a small monetary promise to buy their game? Well besides special "Limited Edition packaging," it'll also come packed with a two-disc soundtrack featuring 48 songs by Guilty Gear composer Daisuke Ishiwatari (which is 19 more songs than in the Japanese version).

More interesting, though, is the inclusion of a bonus video disc containing "basic tutorials, expert advice, and character-specific strategies." The video was made in collaboration with experts from Dustloop.com and Shoryuken.com, and the press release promises it'll provide "a full-scale tutorial detailing basic attacks, special moves, distortion drives, proven basic and advance combos, and advanced strategies and tactics per character." As far as usually useless Limited Edition bonus content tends to go, this actually sounds like a pretty nifty fit for newbies purchasing a hardcore 2D fighting game.

Ubisoft Announces Ghost Recon 4, Sets Red Steel 2 for Winter
April 29, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Ghost ReconA slew of announcements have fallen out of Ubisoft's latest financial report, with the publisher revealing the development of a new title in the Ghost Recon franchise. Additionally, the report also sets Red Steel 2 for release on the Wii by Christmas, and finally gives the oft-delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction a more definitive release window.

According to the financial documents (via MCV), the new Ghost Recon is currently only titled "Ghost Recon 4," with no other information about the game provided. That information will probably have to come fairly soon, though, as the game is set to ship some time during the current fiscal year -- meaning March, 2010 at the latest.

Also set for release before the end of the fiscal year is Splinter Cell: Conviction, the latest game in the series that was originally set for release in 2007 before running into several significant delays. And lastly, Red Steel 2, the sequel to Ubisoft's Wii launch title, was confirmed for release by Christmas of this year. As has been previously revealed, the report also reconfirmed that the game would use the Wii MotionPlus add-on to enhance the katana-fighting gameplay.

Fallout 3 Patched to Version 1.5
April 29, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Fallout 3

Bethesda released a title update for the PC and Xbox 360 editions of Fallout 3 this morning, bringing the post-apocalyptic RPG to version 1.5. The developer detailed the full list of bug fixes and changes in this latest patch -- mostly prep work for next week's Broken Steel DLC -- on their official blog:
New Features
  • New achievements for Broken Steel
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed issue with VATS calculations not appearing properly for perks (PC)
  • Fixed crash related to altered references between master files
  • LOD objects render properly when loaded from DLC worldspaces
  • Fixed issue with companion NPCs not loading into cells immediately after player

Because of this update's focus on the Xbox 360 and PC exclusive Broken Steel DLC, we don't expect to see a similar patch for the PlayStation 3 game anytime soon. Still, we sent for word from Bethesda about a potential PS3 patch, and will be sure to update this story as soon as we've heard back.
